MACHAME ROUTE

Overview

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m). This 7-day itinerary allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of reaching the summit successfully.

Itinerary

  • Altitude: 1,640m (Moshi) / 1,800m (Arusha) → 2,835m (Machame Camp)
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Itinerary:

  • After an early breakfast, your guide will brief you about the climb.
  • Drive from Moshi (1.5 hrs) / Arusha (2.5 hrs) to Machame Gate (1,800m).
  • Complete park registration and begin the trek through the lush rainforest.
  • Expect muddy trails, giant ferns, and Colobus monkeys.
  • Reach Machame Camp (2,835m), where you will have dinner and overnight stay.
  • Altitude: 2,835m → 3,850m
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Itinerary:

  • Start with a steep ascent as the forest transitions to moorland.
  • Views of Kilimanjaro’s peak and Shira Plateau emerge.
  • Pass rocky ridges and lava formations before reaching Shira Camp (3,850m).
  • Acclimatization walk in the evening before dinner.
  • Altitude: 3,850m → 4,630m (Lava Tower) → 3,960m (Barranco Camp)
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert & Moorland

  • The trek starts with a gentle ascent, moving into the alpine desert.
  • Reach Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, stopping for lunch.
  • Descend into the Barranco Valley (3,960m), surrounded by massive cliffs.
  • Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic campsites, with views of the Great Barranco Wall.
  • Altitude: 3,960m → 4,035m
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland & Alpine Desert

  • Begin with an exciting climb up Barranco Wall (not technical but steep).
  • Trek through undulating terrain with breathtaking views.
  • Pass through the Karanga Valley, where fresh water is available.
  • Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035m) for rest and acclimatization.
  • Altitude: 4,035m → 4,673m
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Itinerary:

  • A short but steep climb to Barafu, the final camp before the summit.
  • Traverse an exposed ridge with strong winds.
  • Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,673m) in the early afternoon.
  • Rest, hydrate, and prepare for summit night.
  • Altitude: 4,673m → 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) → 3,100m (Mweka Camp)
  • Distance: 17 km
  • Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic, then Moorland

Itinerary:

  • Midnight departure for the summit attempt.
  • Trek in freezing conditions via Stella Point (5,756m), then push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
  • Enjoy the breathtaking sunrise over the glaciers and take memorable photos.
  • Begin descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.
  • Altitude: 3,100m → 1,640m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Itinerary:

  • Enjoy a leisurely descent through the lush rainforest.
  • Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640m) for certificates and celebration.
  • Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can relax after an incredible achievement.
