Embark on a 3-day adventure in Mahale Mountains National Park, starting with a scenic boat ride across Lake Tanganyika from Kigoma. Then, trekking through the rainforest provides intimate encounters with chimpanzees in their natural habitat, witnessing activities like feeding, playing, and tool usage.

 

Afternoon options include a boat ride on Lake Tanganyika, home to hippos, crocodiles, and diverse bird species. The final day includes a leisurely breakfast before departing from the lodge via a return boat trip to Kigoma.

Itinerary

In the morning, meet your driver, who will transfer you to the boat for a scenic cruise across Lake Tanganyika to Mahale Mountains National Park. (Distance is about 6 hrs – 121 km)

Enjoy lunch on the boat with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Travel by boat from Kigoma to Mahale Mountains National Park (several hours journey).

 

Upon arrival, check into your lodge within the park, set against the backdrop of Lake Tanganyika. Depending on arrival time, begin your first chimpanzee trekking experience. Hike through the dense forest with experienced guides and spend time observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. In the evening, return to your lodge for relaxation and a delicious dinner and unwind while taking in the serene views of Lake Tanganyika at sunset.

Start your day with an early morning chimpanzee trekking session for another opportunity to observe the chimps in the lush forest, as their behavior varies throughout the day.

 

Watch for tracks, calls, and glimpses of chimpanzees along the way. Once the chimpanzee community is located, they observe their behaviour in their natural habitat. Witness activities such as feeding, playing, grooming, or tool usage by the chimpanzees. Enjoy the incredible experience of being up close with these intelligent primates.

 

 In the afternoon, return to the lodge or camp for lunch and some relaxation. In the evening, an evening swim in Lake Tanganyika will be followed by a bonfire on the beach.

Have a delicious dinner at the lodge or camp and share stories of the day’s adventures.
